Return to Greatest Games

Pre season Friendly , 22th July 2014

Goals from Cole Stockton and James Rowe earned Tranmere a 2-2 draw against Everton in Tuesday night's pre-season friendly. Cole Stockton sent the first shot of the game a couple of yards wide of the target after running on to a ball over the defence from Danny Holmes. Though Everton were dominating possession, the early chances came the way of Tranmere. Marc Laird curled wide from 20 yards after being picked out by Jake Kirby and Eliot Richards fired over the bar from the right side of the area after running on to Max Power's through ball.  However, on 25 minutes the visitors took the lead, with Steven Naismith getting in front of his marker to turn in from close range from Luke Garbutt's left wing cross. On 33 minutes Power and Kirby linked up well down the right wing, with Power finding space and drilling in a low cross which had to be turned out of the path of Richards six yards out. John Lundstram dragged a 25 yard shot wide for Roberto Martinez's side on 38 minutes, the last chance of the half.  After Christopher Long fired past the top right corner for the visitors on 59 minutes, Rob Edwards made his first substitutions, with Jason Koumas and Abdulai Baggie replacing Matt Gill and Eliot Richards. Leon Osman curled over the bar from 20 yards on 62 minutes and a minute later Rovers were level. John Stones underhit a back pass to Robles, allowing Stockton to capitalise, running through on goal before chipping over Robles into the net from outside the area. James Rowe and trialists Gerardo Bruna replaced Marc Laird and Jake Kirby on 66 minutes and Bruna did well on the left soon after, finding Koumas who brought a save out of Robles with a swerving shot from 25 yards. On 71 minutes Everton regained the lead, with Leon Osman running unmarked into the six yard box to turn in a corner from the right from Stones. Owain Fon Williams pulled off a fine one handed save to keep out another effort from Osman on 73 minutes, and the keeper saved Darron Gibson's free kick soon after. Rovers drew level for a second time on 87 minutes. Koumas found Baggie on the right wing and he picked out Rowe with a cross who turned the ball against the post before knocking in the rebound from close range.
